The Bethesda garden of Norman and Jean Beaudry is located on 2+ acres of sloping
woodland. The original garden design was begun in 1957 by Cornelia and Sandy Sanders
to showcase their collections of rhododendrons, azaleas, and hollies.
Jean and Norman have lived and gardened here since 1984, adding to the original
design and incorporating their own selections to a collection that now numbers
500+ rhododendrons and azaleas.
The rhododendron collection contains a large number of Gable, Dexter, and Cowles hybrids.
There are also collections of Japanese maples, magnolias, conifers, dwarf conifers,
unusual perennials, wildflowers, and many rare and unusual trees. Some of the
interesting rhododendrons and azaleas to look for are a large specimen of the azalea
Chisolm-Merritt 'Rosebud', a 15-foot R. weyrichii, a very large specimen of
R .oldhamii,
a 12-foot specimen of the hybrid rhododendron 'Hardy Giant', a collection of
45-year old Beltsville dwarfs, and a large spreading pink R. hyperythrum (possibly a
hyperythrum-degronianum hybrid).
