Rhododendrons and the Royal Horticutural Society... Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow
Jim Gardiner will profile the four Gardens of the Royal Horticultural Society,
Wisley in
particular, and will discuss the breadth of their plant collections concentrating on
rhododendrons and azaleas in the garden, the Rhododendron Trials, their history and
the current trial ("Yak" hybrids),
and the challenges of growing and promoting the genus.
Biographical
Jim Gardiner is currently the Curator of the Royal Horticultural Society's Garden at Wisley,
200 acres of horticultural inspiration visited by over 700,000 visitors each year. He has held
this post for nearly 17 years. Prior to this, he trained at the Savill and Valley Gardens,
Windsor, and the University of Cambridge Botanic Garden and has worked for the Royal Botanic
Garden, Edinburgh, the City of Liverpool Botanic Garden, and The Hillier Gardens and
Arboretum (as Curator).
Mr. Gardiner has travelled extensively in North America, northern Europe, New Zealand,
South Korea and Japan representing the RHS and also the Magnolia Society International
(where he is the immediate Past President).
He has written articles for various horticultural periodicals including
The Garden and New Plantsman, written books on Propagation from Seed and
Cuttings for the RHS Wisley Handbook Series as well as two books on
Magnolias incuding Magnolias, A Gardeners Guide published by Timber Press.
Mr. Gardiner is a Fellow of the Institute of Horticulture as well as member of
The Garden Society.
